Uncle of MP Nazrul’s 2nd wife sent to jail in suicide abetment case

A Dhaka court today (23 September) sent Obaidur Rahman, maternal uncle of the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail in a case filed over her alleged suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after DB Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of the Tejgaon Zonal Team, also the investigation officer in the case, produced Obaidur before the court and sought an order to keep him in jail custody.

Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter. He said no bail petition was filed on behalf of Obaidur during the hearing.

In the detention petition, the investigation officer said evidence and witness statements had emerged indicating Obaidur’s involvement in the suicide of Mariam.

The investigation is still ongoing, and police may seek Obaidur’s remand later if necessary, according to the petition. The investigating officer sought his detention in jail in the interest of a proper investigation and justice.

Obaidur was arrested in the capital earlier today.

On 20 September evening, police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the parliament complex. That night, police took Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, into custody.

Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, later filed a case against Nazrul, Maksuda and Obaidur, accusing them of abetting his daughter’s suicide.

The following day, a Dhaka court granted Nazrul four days’ remand and Maksuda one day’s remand in the case. The investigation was subsequently transferred to the DB.

Maksuda was sent to jail yesterday (22 September) after completing her one-day remand, while Nazrul remains on four-day remand.
