A Dhaka court has placed four people, including an Awami League leader, on remand for varying terms in a case over crude bomb blasts in front of Jatrabari Police Station.
After a hearing today (22 September), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin ordered the remand, state lawyer Harun-or-Rashid confirmed.
The accused are Md Rayhan Uddin, 35, office secretary of Unit 6 under Ward 32 of the Banshal police station unit of the Awami League’s Dhaka South chapter; Russel Khan, 32; Ala Uddin, 28; and Abdullah Mashhur Ashrafi, 20.
The court granted four days’ remand for Rayhan and two days each for the other three accused.
Police later arrested the four after analysing CCTV footage and acting on confidential information during separate raids in Dhaka and surrounding areas on 19 and 20 September. They also recovered a motorcycle and four unexploded crude bombs from their possession.
The following day, they were produced before the court, and DB Police Wari Zone Inspector Mohammad Golam Mostafa, the investigation officer, sought five days’ remand for each of them. The court sent the accused to jail and fixed today for the remand hearing.
According to the remand petition, the accused are active members of the banned Awami League and had allegedly been involved in terrorist activities for a long time.
Investigators said they needed to interrogate the accused in custody to uncover the main mystery behind the case, arrest their absconding associates and recover remaining explosives allegedly in their possession.
The prosecution argued in favour of the remand, while the defence opposed it. Following the hearing, the court granted remand for varying terms.
According to the case statement, unidentified miscreants exploded crude bombs in front of Dholairpar and the Jatrabari traffic box under Jatrabari Police Station on the night of 18 September.
A passer-by, Md Ibadur Rahman, 24, was injured.
The DMP Bomb Disposal Unit recovered an unexploded crude bomb from the scene and neutralised it.
Jatrabari Police Station filed the case under Sections 3 and 6 of the Explosives Act.
