A 31-year-old man was found hanging at his Moulvibazar home yesterday (18 September), 11 days after the body of his doctor son was recovered from a rented house in Sylhet.
The deceased was identified as Purnendu Chakraborty, who lived on the second floor of Bhot’s Pharmacy on M Saifur Rahman Road in Moulvibazar town.
According to locals, Purnendu’s wife died about two years ago. Family members alerted police yesterday morning after receiving no response from Purnendu from inside his room. Police went to the house and found the door locked from inside. They broke it open and found Purnendu hanging inside.
The body was recovered from a flat on the second floor of Bhot’s Pharmacy on M Saifur Rahman Road in Moulvibazar town. The pharmacy is the family’s business, and Purnendu lived on its second floor.
Moulvibazar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Manoj Kumar Sarker said that the exact cause of death was not known and that police were investigating.
The body was handed over to the family last night after an autopsy, he added.
Moulvibazar Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said Purnendu’s only son, Dr Padmajit Chakraborty Pranto, had died by suicide on 7 September.
“We heard that his son did this following problems with his wife. Purnendu had been distressed since then. We suspect Purnendu may have died by suicide out of grief over losing his only son,” he added.
Purnendu’s son Pranto’s body was found hanging at a rented house in Sylhet’s Mirzajangal area on 7 September.
He was a physician at Brahmanbaria Medical College. He had married about two years earlier, and his wife is also a doctor.
