A Kushtia hospital was vandalised and four to five people, including a doctor, were injured after relatives of a three-year-old boy allegedly attacked staff following his death from drowning in Mirpur upazila today (18 September).
The child, identified as Rafi, son of Sabbir of Naodapara village, drowned in water in the morning, according to his family.
His relatives rescued him and took him to Mirpur Upazila 50-bed Health Complex, where the duty doctor examined him and declared him dead.
Soon after learning of the death, around 20–25 relatives allegedly attacked the duty doctor and vandalised parts of the health complex, said Dr Piyush Kumar, upazila health and family planning officer.
“Twenty to 25 relatives attacked the duty doctor and the hospital and carried out extensive vandalism. Four to five people, including a doctor, were injured,” he told The Business Standard.
Hospital authorities informed Mirpur Police Station following the incident. Investigation Officer Abdul Aziz later arrived at the health complex with other police personnel and brought the situation under control.
Dr Piyush said hospital employees were now feeling insecure following the attack and vandalism.
He said police had assured the authorities that legal action would be taken based on a complaint.
