BNP interviews 3 aspirants for Thakurgaon-1 by-polls, decision soon: Rizvi

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has interviewed the three aspirants seeking its nomination for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election, but has yet to announce its candidate, BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said today (18 September).

“The main purpose of today’s standing committee meeting was to act as the nomination board. According to our party constitution, the standing committee is the nomination board,” Rizvi said after a meeting of the BNP National Standing Committee at the party chairman’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka.

He said the Thakurgaon-1 seat had fallen vacant after former MP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir became president and that the by-election would be held on 29 October.

“Thakurgaon-1 has fallen vacant. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was the MP from the constituency. The by-election will be held on 29 October, and nomination papers must be submitted to the Election Commission by 27 September. We have interviewed the nomination aspirants. The decision will be announced later,” he said.

The three aspirants are Thakurgaon district BNP President and National Executive Committee member Mirza Faisal Amin, district BNP Vice-President Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury Nomro and district BNP Vice-President Obaidullah Masud.

The BNP had collected nomination forms from the three aspirants earlier this week, with the party’s National Standing Committee serving as the nomination board.

The Election Commission has scheduled the by-election for 29 October, with 27 September set as the deadline for submitting nomination papers.
