A 26-year-old man was hacked to death in Habiganj’s Baniachong upazila today (18 September), allegedly in an attack linked to a longstanding dispute between two local groups.
The deceased was identified as Zayedul Mia, son of Lokman Mia of Mandari village.
Confirming the incident, Sheikh Nazmul Haque, officer-in-charge of Baniachong Police Station, said police recovered the body and sent it to the district hospital for autopsy.
“The incident appears to have stemmed from the longstanding dispute between the groups of former chairman Sheikh Shamsu Mia and Majid Khan in Mandari village. We are investigating the matter,” he said.
According to his relatives, a long-running feud has existed between the groups of Majid Khan and former chairman Sheikh Shamsu Mia in the village.
Zayedul was returning home after working in the haor area this morning when he reached near Majid Khan’s house. Members of the rival group allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.
Locals later rescued Zayedul and took him to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
