The government has approved the import of around 9.2 lakh tonnes of non-urea fertiliser through 44 private importers to meet domestic demand, while also approving the import of another 1.55 lakh tonnes on a government-to-government basis.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, approved the proposals at a meeting today (16 September).
Of the private imports, 19 companies will import 5 lakh tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser from various countries at $938 per tonne, with the total cost estimated at Tk47 crore.
The committee also approved the import of 2.2 lakh tonnes of muriate of potash (MOP) through 14 private importers at around $399 per tonne, costing Tk8.78 crore.
Besides, 10 private companies will import 2 lakh tonnes of triple super phosphate (TSP) fertiliser from various countries at $756 per tonne, with the total cost estimated at Tk15 crore.
Meanwhile, the committee approved government-to-government imports of 35,000 tonnes of MOP from Russia, 80,000 tonnes of DAP from Morocco and 40,000 tonnes of urea from Saudi Arabia.
