Army man killed in Ctg training accident laid to rest beside mother in Rajshahi

The body of army serviceman Tasnim Rifat, who was killed in an accident during a firing exercise in Chattogram on 8 September, was laid to rest beside his mother at their family cemetery in Rajshahi today (10 September)

Rifat’s body reached his village home in Bindarampur under Paba Upazila in the afternoon, where relatives, neighbours, friends and acquaintances gathered to see him for the last time.

His namaz-e-janaza was held after Zuhr prayers, followed by the burial beside his mother’s grave, his relatives said.

The Bangladesh Army accorded Rifat a guard of honour and bid him farewell with state honours.

Earlier in the day, his body was flown from Chattogram to Dhaka and then taken to Rajshahi Cantonment by an Army helicopter. From there, it was taken to his village home in a refrigerated vehicle.

Rifat’s relatives said he was supposed to return home a day after completing his training and then join the Army at Bogura Cantonment.

His mother died of cancer last year. Since then, Rifat had repeatedly wanted to return to Rajshahi, they said.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Rifat was killed in an accident during an Army firing exercise at the Hathazari Field Firing Range in Chattogram on 8 September.

A resident of Bindarampur village in Damkura Union of Paba, Rifat was the second of four siblings. He had served in the Bangladesh Army for around 10 years.

He is survived by his wife and two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Jui.
