A Dhaka court today (10 September) granted a police plea to show former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, as arrested in a murder case filed with Kafrul Police Station over the death of Tariqul Islam Rubel during the July uprising.
Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order after hearing arguments from both sides. Kalimullah’s lawyer Mohsin Reza confirmed the matter.
During the hearing, Kalimullah told the court, “I protested and spoke out over the killing of student Abu Sayed, who was martyred during the July movement, while I was vice-chancellor. I am nothing more than a teacher.”
On 7 September, Sub-Inspector Md Zahurul Islam, the investigating officer of the case, applied to the court to show Kalimullah as arrested.
The court then fixed today for a hearing in the presence of the accused.
According to the police petition, investigators had found evidence suggesting that Kalimullah was directly or indirectly involved in the incident.
His identity and address were also being verified, it said.
The petition further said that showing Kalimullah as arrested in the case was necessary in the interests of a proper investigation.
Opposing the plea, Mohsin Reza said Kalimullah was a professor with no political position and had even been arrested during the Awami League government.
State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon supported the plea, saying Kalimullah had been involved with the Awami League and had links to the killing.
With the court’s permission, Kalimullah then said, “I have never been involved with any political party in my student life or teaching career. I am not involved with any party now either.”
He added that while serving as vice-chancellor, he had held a press conference against then Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, following which he was sent to jail.
“I protested and spoke out over the killing of student Abu Sayed, who was martyred during the July movement, while I was vice-chancellor. I am nothing more than a teacher,” he told the court.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court ordered that Kalimullah be shown as arrested in the case.
According to the case statement, victim Tarikul Islam Rubel took part in the protests in the Kafrul area on July 19, 2024.
At around 8pm, protesters came under attack and gunfire, and Rubel was shot in the head. He later died of his injuries.
A murder case was later filed over the incident.
