Police allege affair dispute behind Ashulia couple, newborn murders; arrest one

A dispute over an old romantic relationship allegedly led to the deaths of a couple and their newborn in Ashulia’s Jamgora, according to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).

The bodies of Alamgir Kabir, 45, his wife Nazma Khatun, 39, and their newborn were recovered from a locked room on 5 September. PBI Dhaka District later arrested Moniruzzaman alias Hridoy, accusing him of involvement in the deaths.

PBI said Nazma had been in a romantic relationship with Hridoy before her marriage to Alamgir. Investigators said Alamgir later learned about the relationship, leading to a dispute between the two men.

According to Hridoy’s statement and the PBI investigation, Nazma and Alamgir went to Hridoy’s rented home on the day of the incident and brought him to their home to discuss the matter. 

Hridoy told investigators that an argument over the relationship escalated into a physical altercation, during which Alamgir assaulted him, and Nazma hit him with a broom.

PBI claimed that Hridoy kicked Nazma in the abdomen during the altercation, which led to the birth of a dead baby and the eventual death of Nazma, according to the investigation.

Hridoy told investigators that Alamgir then attacked him with a ladle and a pipe. During the altercation, Hridoy allegedly strangled Alamgir with a towel, PBI said. 

The agency said that he then placed the three bodies on a bed and fled with Nazma’s mobile phone, SIM card, office ID and purse.

PBI arrested Hridoy from Narsinghapur based on intelligence and recovered the items from his rented home, according to the agency. He later gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The bodies were discovered after residents reported a foul smell from Room 56 on the second floor of a house in Jamgora. Ashulia police recovered the decomposed bodies and sent them for autopsy. Nazma’s elder sister, Shapla Begum, later filed a case against unidentified persons.

PBI began a shadow investigation after the case was filed and formally took charge on 8 September. Investigators examined the victims’ acquaintances, relationships and movements before identifying Hridoy.

PBI said Hridoy had also been named as a suspect in a 2022 murder case in Ashulia. A charge sheet was filed against him in 2023 under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Penal Code.

PBI Dhaka District Superintendent of Police MN Morshed, PPM, said investigators were examining whether anyone else was involved. SI Anisur Rahman of PBI Dhaka District is investigating the case.
