A lightning strike sparked a fire in the gas line at the residence of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood in Sirajganj today (9 September), with no casualties or damage reported.
The fire broke out around 1:15pm at the house on Hosenpur Al-Mahmud Avenue Road in Sirajganj municipality, according to the Fire Service.
The residence’s security guard, Shafiqul Islam, alerted the national emergency service 999. A unit from Sirajganj Fire Station then rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire within five to seven minutes.
Md Russell Mahmud, duty officer at the Sirajganj Fire Service control room, told The Business Standard that the fire broke out in the gas line beside the gate of the minister’s residence.
“No furniture or other belongings were near the site, so there was no damage. We initially believe the fire was caused by a lightning strike,” he said.
The incident caused panic among local residents, who were relieved after firefighters brought the blaze under control.
