The International Crimes Tribunal-2 today (9 September) set 16 September to pass its order on framing charges against 26 accused in a crimes against humanity case over the deaths of 11 people, including BUP student Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, in the capital’s Uttara during the 2024 July Uprising.
The date was fixed after the tribunal heard arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer M Liton Ahmed represented the accused. State-appointed lawyers Md Amir Hossain and M Hasan Imam represented the absconding accused.
The case was previously heard by International Crimes Tribunal-1, where both sides had completed their arguments on framing formal charges. Tribunal-1 had fixed 20 August to pass its order.
However, the three-member bench of Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, later transferred the case to Tribunal-2
The case was then heard afresh today by the three-member Tribunal-2 bench headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
Of the 26 accused, eight, including former additional superintendent of police Mirza Salahuddin, are in jail. The other 18 are absconding, including former Dhaka-18 lawmaker Habib Hasan, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman and former Uttara division deputy commissioner Kazi Ashraful Azim.
The case contains two formal charges over the deaths of 11 people in Uttara on 18 and 19 July 2024.
According to the first charge, Mugdho was helping injured people get to hospital and distributing water and biscuits among protesting students and members of the public in Sector 3 of Uttara on 18 July when he was shot.
Fellow protesters took him to Uttara Crescent Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The same day, Jahiduzzaman Tanvin, Sheikh Fahmin Zafar, Md Shakil Hossain, Md Sabbir Hossain and Sajib Sarker were allegedly shot dead in Uttara.
The charge also alleges that Uber driver Mokhlesur Rahman Durjoy was killed after being run over by the rear wheel of an armoured personnel carrier (APC) in Uttara.
The second charge relates to the alleged shooting deaths of Ridwan Sharif, Md Sabbir Islam, Md Asadullah and Naima Sultana in Uttara on 19 July.
