Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today (9 September) said the government has set a target to clean 1,600 kilometres of service drains in Chattogram city and remove accumulated silt and rubbish before the next monsoon season.
“Work is also under way to remove rubbish and silt from 25 canals in the city,” he told parliament while responding to a question from Chattogram-13 lawmaker Sarwar Jamal Nizam.
He also said the Baroipara Canal Excavation Project, aimed at addressing waterlogging in the port city, was fully completed.
Work is also under way to remove and clear waste and silt from another 32 canals in the city, he added.
DPPs for maintenance of 57 canals
A Development Project Proposal (DPP) is being prepared to maintain 36 canals covered by the waterlogging mitigation project being implemented by the Chattogram Development Authority, the prime minister said.
A separate DPP is also being prepared for the dredging and maintenance of another 21 canals outside the project, he added.
48km of roads, six footbridges built
The prime minister said several infrastructure development projects were being implemented in areas under the Chattogram City Corporation, including improvements to Airport Road and other roads.
Under these projects, 48km of roads, two culverts and six footbridges have been constructed, he added.
Development work on two playgrounds has also been completed, while work on six more playgrounds is under way.
