The 18 Armed Police Battalion (APBN) returned 42 recovered mobile phones and Tk77,000 in recovered funds to their owners in Rangamati today.
The phones and money were handed over at the battalion’s office in Reserve Bazar at around 11am today (9 September).
The recovered funds included Tk47,000 mistakenly transferred through bKash and Tk30,000 allegedly taken through fraud.
18 APBN Commanding Officer and Superintendent of Police Rezaul Karim presided over the event and handed the recovered property to its owners.
Among the recipients was Namita Chakma, who recovered her phone six months after losing it.
Namita said she had used the device to make video calls to her children living away from home and had been unable to maintain that contact after losing it.
She filed a general diary with the police but received no resolution despite waiting for a long time, she said.
After learning from a relative that the APBN worked to recover lost phones, Namita submitted a copy of her general diary to the battalion a month ago.
“They recovered the phone and returned it to me today. I am delighted and do not have the words to express my gratitude,” she said.
Businessman Yasin Arafat also received a phone he had lost three years ago.
“I had abandoned hope of recovering the phone, but the APBN brought an end to that disappointment,” he said.
Speaking at the event, Rezaul Karim said protecting people’s lives and property was among the principal responsibilities of the police.
The 18 APBN would continue using technology and professional methods to recover lost property, he added.
Rezaul urged people to exercise caution when using mobile financial services, avoid transactions with unknown individuals and remain alert to online fraud.
“Police success is not limited to arresting offenders. Returning lost property to a helpless person also reflects the humanitarian responsibility and true spirit of police service,” he said.
18 APBN Second-in-Command and Additional Superintendent of Police Enayet Karim, Adjutant Moshiar Rahman and Assistant Superintendent of Police Ittekhayrul Islam attended the event.
Police inspectors, other battalion personnel and members of the cybercrime cell were also present.
