‘Ansar members beat man to death’ at BTCL office in Tejgaon

A young man died today (8 September) after he was allegedly beaten by on-duty Ansar members at the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) office in the capital’s Tejgaon industrial area.

He was caught allegedly trying to steal from the office, according to a BTCL employee.

The deceased, believed to be around 25 years old, has not yet been identified.

According to a BTCL employee who spoke to The Business Standard on condition of anonymity, three young men climbed over the wall of the BTCL office near Satrasta around 7:30am. On-duty Ansar members caught one of them while the other two fled.

The Ansar members later tied up the detained man and beat him, the employee said. He became unconscious and was taken by a CNG-run autorickshaw to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 3:30pm, where a doctor declared him dead.

DMCH Police Camp Inspector Md Habibur Rahman confirmed that the body is currently in the hospital morgue.

Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman told The Business Standard that police had been informed of the incident and that personnel had been sent to the hospital.

“We will provide further details later,” he said.
