Delhi has told Dhaka that it will not extradite Bangladesh’s ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina under any circumstances, according to an Anandabazar report published yesterday (7 September).
A senior Indian intelligence delegation conveyed the message during a visit to Dhaka about a month ago, holding talks with top Bangladeshi officials.
Sources say the delegation firmly stated that no extradition request will be granted while Hasina remains in India.
New Delhi’s position, officials say, rests on the argument that any extradition request can only be approved once the host country is satisfied the individual has been convicted through due legal process.
According to the same report, the Indian delegation also said that if she should return to Bangladesh, she should not face any undignified treatment. Second, if the Awami League president is arrested, special attention must be paid to her security.
