SI beaten to death: 1 arrested, operations underway to arrest others involved

Police have arrested a man in connection with the beating death of a police officer in the Aminbazar area of Savar, Dhaka.

The arrested man is Zahirul Islam, 30, son of Moslem Uddin of the Bardeshi area of Aminbazar.

Dhaka District Police Superintendent Shamima Parveen confirmed the arrest to The Business Standard, saying, “An operation was conducted on the night of the incident, and one person involved in the incident was arrested. Operations are ongoing to arrest the others involved.”

Earlier, the wife of the deceased police officer, Shiuli Begum, filed a case with Savar Model Police Station over the killing of Altaf Hossain, 38.

Several people were named as accused in the case, along with unidentified individuals.

Altaf Hossain, 38, lived with his family in the Borodeshi Madina City area of Aminbazar. His family runs a small factory there that manufactures pyjamas and T-shirts. He was returning home with his younger son Ariful on Tuesday night when he intervened after seeing a group of youths assaulting Kalam, an elderly rickshaw garage owner, over a dispute involving a vehicle. Altaf identified himself as a police officer when the youths became aggressive, but they allegedly turned on him and his son, beating them severely.

Around 9:30pm, Altaf and his son Ariful were rescued in critical condition and taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, where doctors declared Altaf dead.
