Four people, including a mother and her teenage son, were killed and at least two others seriously injured in a head-on collision between a covered van and a CNG-run autorickshaw in Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila today (5 September).
The accident occurred around 11:30am in the Kanchanpur area on the Kaliakair-Fulbaria-Mawna regional road, confirmed Kaliakair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam.
Two of the deceased were identified as Firoza Begum, 45, wife of expatriate Hashem Mia of Bongkhuri area in Tangail’s Mirzapur upazila, and her son Md Asadul, 18.
The identities of the other two victims have not yet been established. However, one of them is estimated to be around 40 years old.
According to police and local eyewitnesses, a CNG-run autorickshaw carrying passengers was heading towards Kaliakair when it collided head-on with a goods-laden covered van travelling in the opposite direction in Kanchanpur.
The impact crushed the autorickshaw and sent it into a paddy field beside the road.
Two passengers were killed on the spot.
Local residents and police rescued the injured and took them to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex. A teenage boy and later a woman died while undergoing treatment there.
The other two critically injured victims were transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
OC Shahidul Islam said four people had died in the collision and the relatives of two victims took their bodies home from the scene, while police seized both vehicles involved in the crash, he said.
Efforts are underway to identify the remaining two victims, and legal proceedings over the accident are in progress, the OC added.
