A case application has been filed in a Dhaka court against 14 individuals, including officials of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, on charges of fraud, misappropriation of funds, assault, attempted murder and extortion.
July fighter Md Gias Uddin, 48, filed the application before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam today (1 September), the plaintiff’s lawyer Md Yasin Miah confirmed the matter.
After recording the plaintiff’s statement, the court directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police to investigate the allegations and submit a report by 5 October.
Among the accused are July Shaheed Smrity Foundation Senior Verification Officer Iftekhar Hossain, 30, officers Mehedi Hasan Prince, 28, Afzalur Rahman Sayem, 25, Alif, and Executive Member Sabrina Afroz Srabonti, 26.
The other accused named in the application are Saidur Rahman Shahid, 24, Sagar, 29, Yasin Mostafa, Zahid, Momenuzzaman Dipu, and Sazzad Mostafa. Their addresses have been shown as associated with the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation.
The application also names Harun Or Rashid of Keraniganj, Md Kamrul Hossain of Ramna and Fatema Afrin Payel of Malibagh as accused. Another 20 to 25 unidentified individuals have also been accused.
According to the case application, Gias Uddin, a gazetted July fighter, repeatedly contacted the foundation to collect a Tk3 lakh cheque due to him along with other government benefits.
The accused allegedly delayed the process in various ways and later demanded money in exchange for providing the benefits.
The complaint said that on 3 May at around 3pm, Gias went to the foundation to collect the cheque. The accused allegedly demanded 50% of the cheque amount, or Tk1.5 lakh.
When he refused to pay, the accused allegedly took him to a room and assaulted him. At one point, he was pushed against a wall and hit his head on an iron rod before falling unconscious, according to the complaint.
The plaintiff also alleged that his July fighter file, medical documents and National Identity Card (NID) were retained at the foundation.
