A 20-year-old youth was shot dead allegedly by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Chimtibil border in Habiganj’s Chunarughat upazila today (30 August).
The incident occurred around 11:30am in the border area of Ahmadabad Union, said Mohammad Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chunarughat Model Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Sohag Mia, son of Shafik Mia, a resident of the border area.
According to locals, Sohag had gone to the border area to graze cattle, as he did regularly. BSF members allegedly opened fire on him around 11:30am, leaving him critically injured.
When Sohag’s family members could not find him, they searched the area and found him lying injured near the border.
They rescued him and took him to Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex, where duty doctor Sirajam Munira declared him dead.
Sohag’s uncle Abdul Kadir alleged that BSF members opened fire on him without provocation.
Police said they went to the health complex after receiving information about the incident.
“We went to the hospital after receiving the news. Legal steps will be taken in connection with the incident,” the OC said.
