Chittagong University (CU) hosted the 2nd NILS-LEB National Model Legislative Assembly 2026, with more than 300 students from over 50 universities across Bangladesh gaining hands-on experience in lawmaking, policy formulation, legal analysis and parliamentary debate over two days.
The event was jointly organised by the NILS Chittagong University Chapter and Legal Empowerment Bangladesh (LEB), with The Business Standard as media partner.
The closing ceremony and prize-giving were held at the CU Law Department yesterday (29 August).
Participants were divided into three houses, with each debating and drafting amendments on separate legislative topics: environmental justice under the Environment Conservation Act, 1995, in House 1; food safety under the Safe Food Act, 2013, in House 2; and prevention of human trafficking and migrant smuggling under the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Prevention and Suppression Act, 2026, in House 3.
On the first day, 20 participants were selected from pre-submitted draft proposals to present their positions, followed by open-floor debates. The second day featured group presentations, critical reviews, voting on amended draft bills and their formal adoption.
Awards were given in categories including best MP, best government MP, best opposition MP, best policy paper and best amendment proposal.
In House 1, Jessore-2 won best MP, Dinajpur-6 best government MP and Noakhali-6 best opposition MP. Natore-3 won best policy paper, while Rangpur-6 won best amendment proposal.
In House 2, Patuakhali-3 won best MP, Dinajpur-6 best government MP and Bagerhat-2 best opposition MP. Mymensingh-5 won best policy paper, while Dhaka-8 won best amendment proposal.
In House 3, Rajshahi-6 won best MP, Pabna-1 best government MP and Narail-2 best opposition MP. Munshiganj-2 won best policy paper, while Dhaka-6 and Noakhali-3 jointly won best amendment proposal.
Sanjida Alam of House 3 was named best observer, while Feni University’s Jannatul Tajrin Tahriya was named best campus ambassador.
CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Al-Forkan attended the prize-giving ceremony as chief guest and chief patron.
