Newly appointed Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner Mahbubur Rashid today (28 August) said police are working to uncover the clues behind last week’s quadruple murder in the city and bring those responsible to justice.
“It is our responsibility to find answers to all the questions surrounding the murders. Further action will be taken after analysing the information and evidence found during the investigation,” he told reporters after visiting the crime scene in the Machhuapara area today.
The police commissioner said he visited the scene considering the sensitivity of the case and the investigation is being conducted with due seriousness.
“Our goal is to collect all the evidence, bring everything to light and submit a charge sheet to the court to ensure justice,” he said.
He said police are receiving all necessary technical and intelligence support for the investigation.
“If you give us any new clues, we will surely investigate,” he added.
Retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bhola, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12, were strangled to death at their home in Machhuapara on the night of 21 August.
Police recovered the bodies on the following night.
After autopsies, the bodies were handed over to the family members.
Ganapati’s elder brother Gopinath Chakraborty filed a murder case against unidentified assailants with Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Kotwali Police Station on the afternoon of 23 August.
A day later, detectives arrested two men from the city.
They were identified as Mugdha Das, 23, son of Kanu Das, and Siddhartha Das, 19, son of Binoy Das, both from the Machhuapara area.
Police said the two arrested suspects gave confessional statements before the Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The Detective Branch (DB) has been assigned to investigate the case, with DB Officer-in-Charge Zeenat Ali appointed as the investigation officer.
Responding to a question about drugs, Commissioner Mahbubur Rashid said drug abuse was not only a problem in Rangpur but had become a wider social issue.
“It is a problem of the country and, right now, it is a social problem,” he said, adding that he had already held discussions with officials on the issue and given them a deadline to take measures to combat it.
