Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd president of Bangladesh.
In a Facebook post today (20 August), Yunus extended his “heartfelt congratulations and best wishes” to Fakhrul, praising his more than five decades of political experience and his role in the country’s political history.
He, also the former chief adviser to the interim government, described Fakhrul as a distinctive figure in national politics, citing his organisational skills, wisdom, leadership during times of crisis and extensive experience working with people at the grassroots level.
Yunus said he believed Fakhrul, as an academic, seasoned politician and “man of principle”, would uphold the dignity of the country’s highest constitutional office.
“I look forward to Bangladesh advancing towards greater prosperity, justice, and democracy under the leadership of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir,” Yunus wrote.
He also wished Fakhrul good health, a long life and success in carrying out his responsibilities as president.
