A Dhaka court today (17 August) sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a case filed over the recovery of 225 packets of heroin from the Kazipara overbridge area under Kafrul Police Station in the capital.
Judge Md Rahibul Islam of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict against the convict, Md Rab Mia.
The court also imposed a fine of Tk10,000. In default of payment, he will have to serve an additional year of simple imprisonment.
Public Prosecutor Md Abdur Rashid Molla confirmed the matter, saying the court issued an arrest warrant against the convict as he was absconding when the verdict was announced.
According to the case statement, police received a tip-off on 23 February 2016 that several people were waiting under the Kazipara overbridge to sell narcotics.
Police later conducted a raid at around 11:15pm. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the suspects attempted to flee, but Rab Mia was arrested.
During the operation, police recovered 225 packets of heroin, estimated to be worth around Tk40,000, from his possession.
Following the incident, Kafrul Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Abu Zahid filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act.
On 31 March 2016, Kafrul Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Bayezid Mostafa submitted the charge sheet against the accused.
The court framed charges on 3 August of the same year and ordered the trial to begin.
During the trial, the court recorded the testimonies of five out of eight listed witnesses before delivering the judgment.
