Two people were killed and three others injured when a truck collided with a CNG-run autorickshaw in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat today (15 August).
The deceased were identified as Abdul Jalil, 50, son of Mohammad Ali of Dakshin Goddimari village in Shingimari union, and Zahurul Haque, 48, son of Tayeb Ali of Paschim Sardubi village in Barakhata union of the upazila.
The accident occurred around noon on the Lalmonirhat–Burimari highway near the Sonali Bank area in Hatibandha upazila.
Police and locals said the hired autorickshaw was heading towards Hatibandha from the Barakhata area. When it reached the accident site, it collided head-on with a Burimari-bound truck coming from Lalmonirhat.
The truck lost control following the collision and crashed into a motorcycle showroom beside the highway.
The autorickshaw was mangled in the crash, leaving two passengers dead on the spot and three pedestrians injured.
On information, Fire Service personnel rescued the injured and took them to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex. They were later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Hatibandha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashrafuzzaman Sarker said locals detained the truck and handed it over to police.
Police officers were sent to the scene to investigate the accident, he added.
