The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit and the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will remain active in the field around the clock to curb muggings in the capital, DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said today (13 August).
He issued the directive during the DMP’s monthly crime review meeting for July at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Dhaka’s Rajarbagh.
The commissioner instructed the specialised units to identify areas vulnerable to muggings and strengthen intelligence surveillance, patrols and drives there in coordination with the crime division.
He also directed officers to intensify operations in mugging-prone areas and ensure that those involved in such crimes are brought to justice promptly.
“Law enforcement efforts should not be limited to operations after an incident takes place. Effective intelligence gathering and stronger policing at the field level are needed to prevent crimes before they occur,” he said.
The DMP chief also ordered a zero-tolerance approach to drug-related crimes.
He instructed police to strengthen intelligence activities and continue regular drives against drug traffickers and others involved in the illegal trade.
He also directed officers to ensure that no illegal activities take place at hotels and spa centres within their respective police station jurisdictions.
Police were asked to take immediate legal action upon receiving information about unlawful activities and maintain regular monitoring of such establishments.
The meeting also focused on improving the effectiveness of criminal investigations.
Mosleh Uddin instructed officers-in-charge of police stations and senior officials of the crime division to visit crime scenes in every case.
He stressed the importance of on-site inspections, proper evidence collection and thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding each incident to determine the actual cause.
The commissioner also directed field-level officers to perform their duties with professionalism, responsibility and dedication to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of city residents.
