Police have arrested two employees of Agrani Bank’s Laldighi East Corporate Branch in Chattogram after Tk4.38 crore allegedly went missing from the branch’s cash vault.
The arrested are Cash-in-Charge Kamrul Hossain and Md Zafrullah Tanveer.
A court has sent both to jail, police said.
Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, inspector (investigation) at Kotwali Police Station and the investigation officer in the case, told The Business Standard that the two were arrested over allegations of embezzling Tk4.38 crore belonging to the bank’s customers.
“Police also seized two mobile phones from the accused. In addition, they recovered a 64GB pen drive containing WhatsApp communications between the suspects and screen recordings of various information,” he said.
“The case is currently under investigation,” Iqbal Hossain added.
Earlier on 10 August, branch General Manager Mostak Ahmed filed a case with Kotwali Police Station against Kamrul Hossain, Zafrullah Tanveer and several unidentified individuals over the alleged embezzlement.
According to the case statement, Kamrul Hossain was responsible for the branch’s cash operations and vault.
After banking activities and transactions ended on 9 August, officials detected a discrepancy while reconciling the cash balance with the amount stored in the vault.
A subsequent review of the vault records, relevant documents and other paperwork found a shortage of Tk4.38 crore, according to the case statement.
Kamrul Hossain could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy, it said.
