The University Grants Commission (UGC) is taking initiatives, including increasing research grants, to improve the skills of young university teachers and encourage them to focus more on research, UGC member Professor Dr Abdullah-Al-Mamun said today (12 August).
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the opening of a daylong workshop titled “The Modern Social Scientists: Navigating Research, Teaching and Academic Growth” at the Professor Muzaffar Ahmad Chowdhury Auditorium of Dhaka University’s Faculty of Social Sciences today (12 August).
The workshop was organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dhaka University.
Professor Abdullah said various activities are being carried out under the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project to ensure knowledge- and skills-based education in higher education.
“Alongside training, initiatives are being taken to increase research grants to enhance the capacity of young teachers,” he said.
He added that the UGC plans to allocate funds to help young teachers participate in international conferences and give them priority in faculty exchange programmes.
Initiatives are also being taken to involve them in programmes such as summer schools and Young Scholars programmes, he said.
“The government is working to build a knowledge- and skills-based society. Young teachers will play a very important role in this regard. Enhancing their skills will help improve the quality of research and higher education,” Professor Abdullah-Al-Mamun said.
Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Abdus Salam chaired the programme.
“Alongside publishing research papers, attention should also be given to increasing citations,” he said.
Good research helps raise a university’s profile internationally and contributes to its position in global rankings, he added.
Professor Abdus Salam also stressed ensuring adequate research facilities, strengthening international collaboration and securing research funding.
