6 months of feasting, now you seem intent on eating up the party: BNP MP to local leaders, activists

Rafiqul Islam Jamal, the BNP lawmaker for Jhalokathi-1, has issued a stern warning to local party leaders in the district, accusing them of rampant extortion, financial compromises with the ousted Awami League and sacrificing organisational ideals for personal greed.

In a Facebook post yesterday (6 August), Rafiqul remarked, “I urge the leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies in Jhalakathi to curb their greed. 

“You have eaten plenty in six months [since the BNP came into power]. You ate in exchange for guarding Awami League leaders and activists, you ate by advocating on their behalf, you ate by guarding Awami League homes, and you ate by guarding contracting works.” 

The lawmaker claimed that local BNP units are compromising political integrity by admitting Awami League members into the party fold in exchange for cash. 

“Finally, you are even eating by making Awami League members join the party in exchange for money. It seems you will end up eating the party itself,” the MP said.

Highlighting the disconnect between the local leadership’s actions and the sacrifices made during recent anti-government movements, he criticised party activists for failing to honour those who lost their lives.

“You should be ashamed that you could not even offer prayers and supplications on 5 August for the martyrs of 36 July, whose blood gave you the opportunity to eat so much,” he wrote.
