The Jahangirnagar University administration today (6 August) temporarily suspended a student over a controversial Facebook post on the July Uprising and alleged links to a banned organisation.
The information was confirmed in a press release signed by the university’s acting Director Dr Md Mohiuddin.
The university has also filed a case against him with Ashulia Police Station and formed a five-member investigation committee headed by Prof Md Abdul Halim of the Department of Botany.
According to the statement, Sharafat Sharik, a student of the 2024–25 academic session (54th batch) in the Department of Archaeology and a resident of Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq Hall, has been temporarily suspended under Section 4(1)(b) of the JU Students’ Discipline Ordinance, 2018.
The university administration has directed the committee to submit its findings within 15 working days.
Other members of the committee are Prof Dr Abu Sayeed Md Mostafizur Rahman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Prof Dr Md Kamruzzaman of the Department of Zoology, Associate Professor Dr Abdus Sattar of the Department of Philosophy, and Md Rezaul Alam, System Analyst of the ICT Cell, who will serve as the member secretary.
The controversy began after Sharik published a post on his personal Facebook account yesterday(5 August). The post, which criticised the July Uprising and included the slogans “July Murdabad, Muktijuddho Zindabad. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.” Students detained him in the hall and took him to the university’s Proctor Office.
The university administration later handed him over to the police.
