A passenger arriving from Dubai was detained at Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport today (3 August) after authorities recovered an estimated 1.5kg of suspected gold concealed inside his underwear.
The operation was carried out jointly by the National Security Intelligence (NSI), the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and Customs Intelligence, according to a press release issued by the airport.
The passenger, identified as Mohammad Tushar of Cumilla, arrived on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-148 at around 8:20am.
During the search, officials recovered gold in paste and powder form, weighing an estimated 1,500 grams.
Authorities said the exact amount of pure gold has yet to be determined, as the seized material is being processed to separate the gold from other substances before it is weighed. If the entire quantity is confirmed to be gold, its market value would be around Tk2.86 crore.
The recovered consignment will be handed over to airport customs after the final assessment of its gold content, while legal proceedings have been initiated against the passenger under the relevant laws.
Airport authorities said intelligence agencies, Customs Intelligence, airport customs and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) will continue coordinated efforts to prevent gold smuggling and the illegal movement of foreign currency through Shah Amanat International Airport.
