Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an alleged smuggler along with 39 gold bars weighing nearly 7kg near the Darshana border in Chuadanga.
According to a BGB press release issued today (1 August), the seized gold weighs 6.968kg and has an estimated market value of Tk13.32 crore.
The detainee, Rabiul Islam, 34, is a resident of Chhoygharia village in Darshana.
BGB said its Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB) launched the operation after receiving intelligence that a large consignment of gold was about to be smuggled into India through the Parkestopur border area.
At around 4:20pm, a BGB patrol intercepted a man travelling towards the border on a motorcycle. A body search led to the recovery of 39 gold bars of varying sizes, the statement said.
The force also seized the motorcycle allegedly used to transport the gold, a feature phone and Tk140 in cash from the detainee.
During preliminary questioning, Rabiul allegedly admitted that he was carrying the gold for smuggling into India, according to BGB.
The seized gold is being handed over to the Chuadanga Treasury Office, while the detainee and the motorcycle are being transferred to Darshana Police Station. A case is being filed in connection with the incident.
Chuadanga Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Md Nazmul Hasan said BGB would continue operations to prevent gold smuggling and other cross-border crimes and maintain law and order along the frontier.
