The University of Dhaka (DU) has temporarily suspended three teachers and relieved four others of all academic and administrative responsibilities over separate allegations, following decisions taken at a syndicate meeting held on 28 July.
The meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, also temporarily suspended a university official, formed two inquiry committees and approved the construction of a memorial for those killed during the July mass uprising.
According to a university statement issued today (30 July), Professor Sadeka Halim of the Department of Sociology was temporarily suspended over allegations of “unbecoming conduct” inside and outside the classroom and ethical misconduct.
The syndicate also temporarily suspended Professor Md Shafiqul Islam and Professor Afroza Shelley of the Department of Nuclear Engineering based on complaints lodged by students from multiple batches and the findings of an internal fact-finding committee.
Meanwhile, Professor Md Abdul Muhit of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology was removed from his position as department chair and relieved of all academic and administrative duties over allegations of activities “contrary to the spirit of the July mass uprising”, anti-government propaganda and support for a banned organisation.
On the same grounds, Professor Abu Shara Shamsur Rouf of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Professor Md Rafiqul Islam (Rafiq Shahriar) of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies were also relieved of all academic and administrative responsibilities.
In a separate decision, Professor Mohammad Bahauddin of the Department of Persian Language and Literature was relieved of all academic and administrative duties over allegations of departmental irregularities and plagiarism involving MPhil and PhD theses.
The syndicate also temporarily suspended AKM Mahbub Mustafa, supervising engineer (Civil) at the Office of the Chief Engineer, over alleged violations of office discipline.
The meeting further formed two committees–one to review the transparency of university recruitment conducted between January 2009 and June 2024, and another to examine the use of research funds under the World Bank- and University Grants Commission (UGC)-funded Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) during the same period.
The syndicate also approved the construction of a July Memorial on the university campus in remembrance of those killed during the July mass uprising.
The foundation stone of the memorial is scheduled to be laid on 5 August.
