Arrest warrant issued for ex-Magura SP Jahirul in rape case

A tribunal in Dhaka today (27 July) issued an arrest warrant for Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Md Jahirul Islam, former superintendent of police for Magura, who is currently an officer on special duty (OSD), in a rape case involving allegations of a false promise of marriage.

Judge Muntasir Ahmed of Dhaka Nari O Shishu Nirjatan Daman Tribunal-1 passed the order following a hearing, confirmed lawyer for the plaintiff Md Azmat Hossain.

According to the case statement, the victim first came into contact with Jahirul in January 2021, whilst he was serving as the Magura SP. 

It is alleged that the accused called the woman to his office under various pretexts to build a personal relationship, eventually assuring her that he would divorce his former wife and marry her.

The case statement also alleges that under the pretext of marriage and false assurances, Jahirul repeatedly engaged in physical intimacy with the woman at his official bungalow in Magura, his office restroom, and her residence in Dhaka.

Even after his transfer to the Police Headquarters in Dhaka, he allegedly maintained the relationship by continuing to assure her that he would marry her once his divorce was finalised.

However, when the victim pressed him on the matter on 13 July last year, Jahirul refused to marry her and allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she sought legal help.

Following the incident, a general diary (GD) was lodged at Bhatara Police Station on 15 July 2025, alongside a formal written complaint submitted to the inspector general of police.

The case statement further said that subsequent attempts by relatives to resolve the matter amicably failed. 

On 15 March this year, the accused again refused to marry the victim and reportedly threatened her outside the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Court premises.

The victim filed the case with the tribunal on 20 May. 

Taking cognisance of the matter, the tribunal ordered a judicial inquiry into the allegations.

On 14 July this year, Special Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmudul Huq submitted the investigation report, finding substance in the allegations against the accused officer.
