Police have filed a sabotage case against 54 people over the alleged contamination of the water supply at Alinagar Police Outpost in Jungle Salimpur in Chattogram’s Sitakunda.
Sitakunda Police Station lodged the case last night (26 July) naming 34 accused and also mentioning 20 unidentified people.
Officer-in-Charge Md Mohinul Islam told The Business Standard that police have launched an investigation into the alleged sabotage.
He said police named Yasin, the alleged leader of the criminal group known as Yasin Bahini in Jungle Salimpur, as an accused.
Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam said earlier that around 300 members of the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are stationed at the camp, which receives its water supply through storage tanks.
He said the motor operator on duty noticed a strong foul smell and unusual signs in the water while starting the supply before dawn yesterday.
Officials later found the same condition in every water tank and recovered an empty bottle believed to have contained a poisonous substance.
Police collected water samples and the bottle for laboratory testing.
Masud at the time said investigators could not yet confirm whether the substance was poison, pesticide or another chemical.
They suspect someone opened a connection point in the supply line and poured the substance into the pipeline.

They received primary treatment and recovered without hospital admission, he added.
Additional Deputy Inspector General of Chattogram Range Md Nazim Uddin said investigators found a section of the water pipeline cut and wrapped in plastic inside the forest.
He said suspects allegedly shut the valve to the joint forces’ pipeline, cut the pipe and poured a toxic chemical inside before concealing the damage with plastic.
Police said laboratory tests will determine the exact nature of the substance.
Following the incident, authorities have strengthened security and surveillance in the area.
