Two police sub-inspectors (SIs) were stabbed during a police operation to arrest Alamgir, a listed criminal and alleged drug trader facing 17 cases, in Chattogram late tonight (25 July). Despite the attack, police succeeded in arresting the suspect.
The incident occurred around 10:30pm in the city’s Double Mooring area, confirmed Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Assistant Commissioner (Public Relations) Aminur Rashid.
The injured officers, SI Mubinul Islam and SI Mohsin Uddin Rubel of Double Mooring Police Station, were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.
Hospital sources said both officers sustained injuries from sharp weapons, with SI Mubinul reported to be in serious condition.
Assistant Commissioner Aminur Rashid told The Business Standard around 11:30pm that the two officers had been injured and were receiving treatment at CMCH.
Describing the incident, he said a team from Double Mooring Police Station launched the operation to arrest Alamgir. As SI Mubinul detained the suspect, Alamgir’s associates attempted to free him and stabbed the officer.
“When SI Mohsin Uddin Rubel moved in to rescue his colleague, he was also stabbed,” Aminur said.
He added that SI Mubinul had suffered serious injuries, while SI Mohsin was also wounded.
Police, however, managed to arrest Alamgir during the operation.
Aminur said a sufficient number of officers had participated in the raid and the situation was now under police control. Drives are continuing to arrest the suspect’s accomplices involved in the attack.
Earlier, the duty officer of Double Mooring Police Station told TBS that police personnel had been injured during an operation, but details were not immediately available as officers remained at the scene.
CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (West) Abdullah Mohammad Sheikh Sadi also said police operations were continuing and that a formal briefing would be provided after the operation concluded.
