A video featuring Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker for Satkhira-4 GM Nazrul Islam and a woman has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread controversy online.
Nazrul addressed the issue in a Facebook post today (21 July), identifying the woman in the video as his second wife, Mariam Begum, after the footage, reportedly recorded inside a room, began circulating last night.
He said they were married in a family arrangement on 17 June.
According to the member of parliament, the incident is part of a conspiracy stemming from a longstanding personal and family dispute between his uncle, Obaidullah, and Masum Billah, the father of his second wife.
He also called for legal action against those involved in leaking and spreading the footage.
Maulana Azizur Rahman, secretary general of Satkhira Jamaat, also confirmed that the woman seen in the video is the MP’s second wife.
“We have spoken to his first wife and learned that they had already been married through a family arrangement. The marriage had been kept private due to the age difference. They have been living together as a family since then,” he said.
He also said the party is trying to determine how the CCTV footage was leaked from the premises where it was recorded.
