A youth was found hanging inside his home in Kushtia’s Kumarkhali upazila this morning (6 July) after watching the Brazil vs Norway Fifa World Cup round of 16 match.
The deceased has been identified as Ratan, 20, son of Hossain Mistri of West Gotria village under Koya Union. He was a mason by profession.
Confirming the matter, Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jamal Uddin said the exact reason behind the apparent suicide has not yet been confirmed.
“It cannot be concluded that someone died by suicide simply because a favourite football team lost,” he said, adding that the matter is being investigated.
According to family and police sources, Ratan watched the match in early hours of today before going to sleep in his room. When he did not wake up in the morning, relatives repeatedly called him but received no response. Looking through a window, they saw him hanging inside the room with a scarf wrapped around his neck.
Family members broke open the door and rushed him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police from Kumarkhali Police Station later visited the scene, prepared an inquest report and completed the necessary legal procedures.
Ratan’s father told reporters that his son was a supporter of Brazil and appeared upset after the team’s defeat last night.
However, he said the family could not identify any definite reason for the apparent suicide.
Relatives said Ratan’s wife had been staying at her parental home, which is located next to their house, since the birth of their daughter. He was alone in the room at the time of the incident.
OC Jamal Uddin added, “Following requests from the family members and local residents and in the absence of any objection regarding the death, police completed the legal formalities and allowed the body to be buried without an autopsy.”
