A woman gave birth to quintuplets – three boys and two girls – at Faridpur Medical College Hospital yesterday (2 July), with two of the newborns dying shortly after birth.
According to hospital sources, Chandni Akter, a resident of Bhabukdia village in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur, was admitted to the hospital at around 2:30pm after experiencing labor pains. She later delivered the five babies between 2:07pm and 5pm.
The three surviving newborns have been admitted to the children’s ward of the hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Nurse Minati Sarkar said none of the babies had reached full physical development because they were born at just seven months of gestation.
Chandni’s father, Jahangir Molla, said his daughter was taken to the hospital after going into labor yesterday. Although she gave birth to five babies, two of them died, he said, adding that Chandni and the three surviving newborns remain in critical condition and are undergoing treatment.
According to family members, Chandni married Md Hasan Molla of Bhabukdia village under Dangi Union around a year ago. She is currently a first-year honours student at a college. This was her first pregnancy.
Hospital authorities said intensive treatment is continuing for the mother and the three surviving newborns.
