The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized foreign beer, liquor and cigarettes worth an estimated Tk53.61 lakh during an anti-smuggling operation in Chattogram’s Patenga.
According to a Coast Guard press release issued today (30 June), personnel from the Patenga Outpost carried out the raid at around 2am near Charpara Ghat under Patenga Police Station after receiving intelligence that smuggled goods had been illegally unloaded from a commercial vessel.
During the operation, Coast Guard members recovered 1,765 cans of foreign beer, 74 bottles of vodka, 88 bottles of whisky and 4,800 sticks of foreign cigarettes.
However, the suspected smugglers fled the scene after sensing the presence of law enforcement personnel. No arrests were made during the drive.
The Coast Guard said the seized contraband, valued at approximately Tk53.61 lakh, is being processed for legal action in accordance with existing laws.
It added that intelligence-based operations would continue to prevent the smuggling of illegal alcohol and other contraband into the country.
