Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has approved a proposed operational and development budget of Tk1,039 crore for the 2026–27 fiscal year, with a projected deficit of Tk105 crore.
The budget was approved today (27 June) during the university’s 100th syndicate meeting, BMU authorities confirmed at a press conference led by BMU Treasurer Prof Dr Nahreen Akhtar.
According to them, the approved budget includes Tk634 crore in funding from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Tk136 crore from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Tk163 crore from the university’s own income.
Khandakar Shafiqul Hasan Ratan, director of finance and accounts, said the budget reflects a strong focus on improving patient services, expanding access to free treatment, strengthening cancer care, investing in research and accelerating the digital transformation of healthcare.
Besides, allocation for providing free medicines to both inpatients and outpatients has been increased to Tk20 crore from Tk12 crore.
Under the expanded scheme, patients with hypertension and diabetes will receive their medications free of charge.
All saline and meropenem will also be provided free to patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs).
In a move to enhance cancer treatment, Tk76 crore has been earmarked to restore a long-idle linear accelerator in the oncology department and to purchase two additional linear accelerators.
To strengthen clinical services, Tk90 crore has been allocated for medical and surgical equipment.
The university has also allocated Tk28 crore for its research budget and Tk7 crore to implement digital healthcare facilities.
Another Tk10 crore has been allocated to improve patient care through increased spending on medicines and infection control, with officials saying additional funding could be added in the revised budget if required.
The university authorities said funding for patient nutrition has been raised from Tk15 crore to Tk18 crore.
Meanwhile, scholarships for residency, non-residency and nursing students have been increased from Tk216 crore to Tk227 crore.
