Even 55 years after Bangladesh’s independence, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has yet to gather complete information on the families of 448 martyrs who were killed in frontline combat during Liberation War, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan told parliament today (18 June)
The minister disclosed the information in response to a question from reserved women’s seat lawmaker Rokeya Begum during the tabled question-and-answer session.
In her written question, Rokeya Begum asked why the remaining gazettes of around 1,400 listed martyr families from different districts and upazilas across the country had not yet been published.
In response, the minister said the list of those martyred in frontline battles during the Liberation War had been published in the Bangladesh Gazette, with gazettes issued for 1,399 martyr families.
Among the martyrs killed in frontline battles, heirs of 387 could not be found, families of 11 are not interested in receiving allowances, and six martyr freedom fighters are receiving allowances as general freedom fighters, he added.
The minister also said families of 165 martyrs are interested in receiving allowances but lack the required documents, adding that an initiative has been taken to collect their information.
He further said that allowances have been newly introduced for the families of 40 martyrs, while allowances are already running or files exist for the families of 342 others.
Information collection is ongoing for the remaining 448 martyred freedom fighters, the minister added.
