A Bangladeshi student was killed and three others were injured in a road crash in St John’s, Canada, early on Friday (12 June).
The incident took place near the intersection of Mayor Avenue and Newtown Road at approximately 1:30am Friday, confirmed Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
The deceased, Md Istinab Mahie, 23, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, his cousin Md Mahmud Raihan confirmed to The Business Standard.
The three other occupants of the vehicle were taken to a hospital for treatment following the crash.
Mahie, a resident of Uttar Halishahar in Chattogram, moved to Canada in September 2023 to pursue higher education at Memorial University of Newfoundland, according to family members.
Speaking to TBS, Raihan said Mahie was travelling with three friends at the time of the incident. One of his friends, identified as Koushik, was driving the vehicle.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating the crash, which police believe may have involved reckless driving.
According to police, the driver failed a roadside screening test and was issued a licence suspension. Authorities have also launched a criminal investigation into the incident.
Police have not disclosed further details about those involved.
Meanwhile, Mahie’s parents, Md Mohibe Ullah and Parvin Akhter, have appealed to the relevant authorities for assistance in repatriating their son’s body to Bangladesh.
Raihan said the family has been trying to contact the authorities concerned regarding the repatriation process but has yet to receive a response.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
