The High Court today (14 June) granted bail to Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The High Court bench of Justice Md Atowar Rahman and Justice Biswajit Debnath passed the order after disposing of a previously issued rule concerning his bail application.
Senior lawyers Md Fazlur Rahman, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Syed Mamun Mahbub and advocate Kazi Ahsan Habib appeared in court for the defence, while advocate Khan Md Mainul Hasan Lipon represented the ACC.
Court sources said Kalimullah was denied bail by a Metropolitan Special Judge’s Court on 4 September last year, after which he moved the High Court.
He was arrested on 6 August 2025 from a residence in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and later placed on a five-day remand.
The ACC filed the case on 6 June last year with its Dhaka-1 Integrated District Office, alleging irregularities and embezzlement in a major development project at Begum Rokeya University.
The case accuses Kalimullah and four others of irregularities involving nearly Tk 4 crore in the construction of the Sheikh Hasina Hall for female students and the Dr Wazed Mia Research and Training Institute building.
Other accused include former executive engineer and tender evaluation committee member secretary Md Jahangir Alam, contractor Md Abdus Salam Bachchu, and MM Habibur Rahman.
Kalimullah served as VC of Begum Rokeya University from 2017 to 2021.
