Three individuals, including a woman, have been penalised by the Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court of the Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for assaulting a traffic police officer after being asked not to violate traffic regulations at the Sonargaon Hotel signal in the capital’s Karwan Bazar.
The individuals are Afia Konok, 45, Shamsuzzaman, 51, and Raju Ahmed, 29.
Confirming the matter, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) NM Nasiruddin said that at around 4:45pm on 6 June, two vehicles exited the inner gate of Hotel Sonargaon and were instructed by on-duty Traffic Constable Md Shamim Mia to move back as the traffic signal on the northern side of the Sonargaon intersection was green.
“Ignoring the signal, one of the vehicles moved forward forcefully and four to five individuals got out and told the traffic officer that a VIP was inside and the vehicle could not be reversed. When Constable Shamim Mia attempted to record a video of the vehicle’s number plate for legal action, the accused Afia Konok got out of the vehicle, snatched his mobile phone and threw it onto the road, damaging it.
The group also physically assaulted the on-duty police officer,” Nasiruddin said.
He further said that although the vehicle could not be seized immediately after the incident, two security personnel of the guest group, Raju Ahmed and Shamsuzzaman, were detained and handed over to Hatirjheel Police Station.
Later, Afia Konok, identified as the main instigator of the incident, along with the other two accused, was produced before the Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court of the Tejgaon Division today.
Following a hearing and examination of evidence, the magistrate fined Afia Konok Tk10,000 and Raju Ahmed Tk5,000 under the relevant provisions of the Road Transport Act.
Shamsuzzaman was sentenced to 10 days of imprisonment for his involvement in the incident.
