A total of 68 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations were arrested in the past 24 hours during special operations conducted across different police station areas under the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).
According to a press release issued by CMP last night (2 June), those arrested were accused of involvement in processions, acts of sabotage, and activities deemed anti-state at various times. Legal action has been taken against them at the respective police stations.
CMP data showed that the highest number of arrests, 13, were made in the Khulshi police station area. Another 12 people were arrested from Bayezid Bostami and Kotwali police station areas, while 10 were detained from Panchlaish, and seven from Double Mooring.
In addition, three people were arrested from the EPZ area; two each from Bakalia and Karnaphuli; and one each from Chawkbazar, Chandgaon, Halishahar, Pahartali, Akbar Shah, Bandar, and Patenga police station areas.
Police said several of those arrested held positions in various units of the banned Chhatra League and Jubo League. They are accused of involvement in sabotage, unauthorised processions, and other activities described by police as anti-state.
Among those arrested were Rony Majumdar, vice-president of Guimara Union Chhatra League; Md Hamid, member secretary of Ward No. 3 Chhatra League; and Mohammad Rahim, general secretary of Sadhanpur Union Jubo League in Banshkhali, along with leaders and activists from different units, according to the list released by CMP.
CMP said regular drives are being carried out to maintain law and order in the port city and prevent potential acts of sabotage. The police added that such special operations would continue in the future.
However, no immediate response regarding the allegations was available from the arrested individuals or the organisations concerned.
