Prime Minister Tarique Rahman warned today (31 May) that Bangladesh is entering a crucial and challenging period ahead, emphasising that the country will suffer if both the government and its citizens fail to take the situation seriously.
“The government assumed office in a devastated state. Difficult and important times lie ahead for the country. If we continue in a carefree manner, the country will suffer greatly,” he said at a discussion programme organised by the BNP at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in Dhaka, marking the 45th death anniversary of former president Ziaur Rahman.
Tarique said the current government is trying to run the country in line with the vision of Ziaur Rahman, adding that people place their expectations on those from whom they believe they can receive something meaningful.
He said Ziaur Rahman had transformed Bangladesh through hard work and integrity, to the extent that many people viewed Zia and Bangladesh as inseparable.
“Through dedication and honesty, he brought significant changes to the country. We must follow the path shown by Ziaur Rahman,” the prime minister said.
Tarique also expressed concern over what he described as a decline in social, religious and family values in the country.
He said the government has instructed the information and education ministries to explore ways to instil those values among children and younger generations.
