A woman was killed and at least 12 passengers were injured when a passenger bus overturned in a roadside ditch in the Thutiapukur area on the Palashbari–Gaibandha road in the district this morning (31 May).
According to local sources, the accident occurred when the driver of a Dhaka-bound bus lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into a ditch before overturning.
A female passenger died on the spot, while 12 others sustained injuries in the crash.
The deceased was identified as Rikta Khatun, 27, wife of Azizal Haque of the Sahar Bazar area under Gaibandha Sadar upazila, officer-in-charge of Palashbari Police Station, Mojammel Haque, confirmed.
Upon receiving information, firefighters from the local Fire Service and Civil Defence station rushed to the scene, recovered the body, and rescued the injured passengers, the OC said.
The injured were taken to Gaibandha Sadar General Hospital, where two of them were later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for further treatment, he added.
