Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) began arriving in small processions at the Alia Madrasa ground in Sylhet city this morning (22 January) to attend the party’s first election rally.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 10am, while BNP Chairperson Tareque Rahman is expected to address the gathering as the chief guest around 11am.
Last night, many party leaders and activists spent the night at the venue, setting up makeshift tents on one side of the Alia Madrasa ground and resting on tarpaulins.
Since early morning, BNP leaders and activists have been coming to the rally venue from different parts of Sylhet.
In addition, leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies from various upazilas of Sylhet have joined the gathering.
BNP supporters were seen arriving wearing single-colour T-shirts printed with the sheaf of paddy symbol, T-shirts bearing images of party chairperson Tareque Rahman, as well as carrying party banners.
After concluding the Sylhet rally, Tarique Rahman will address rallies at Ainpur playground in Sherpur of Moulvibazar Sadar upazila, Kuttapara playground in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria, Bhairab Stadium in Kishoreganj, a municipal area in Narsingdi, and Gausia in Rupganj of Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj.
Dialogue with youths
Before the rally, the BNP chairperson is currently holding a dialogue with representatives of Sylhet’s young generation. He is listening to the youths and also offering guidance.

The programme, titled “The Plan: Youth Policy Talk with Tarique Rahman”, began in the conference room of a city hotel this morning.
BNP Central Assistant Organising Secretary Miftah Siddiqui said that the discussion would focus on various issues related to nation-building with youths, during which he would hear their views and offer guidance.
Those present at the event are all general students currently studying at different educational institutions.
After the dialogue, Tarique is set to join the public rally at Alia Madrasah ground.
