Dhaka Metropolitan Police has adopted a coordinated, technology-based and multi-dimensional security plan to ensure safety during Eid-ul-Adha congregations and protect residential and commercial areas that may remain vacant during the holidays.
DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said this in a briefing after inspecting security arrangements at the National Eidgah Ground in Dhaka today (27 May), reads a press release.
The DMP Commissioner said Eid-ul-Adha is one of the largest religious festivals of Muslims, drawing huge gatherings at Eid congregations across the capital, including the National Eidgah Ground and Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
At the same time, many residents leave Dhaka during the Eid holidays, leaving several residential and business areas partially empty.
Considering the overall situation, past experience, current security concerns and possible risks, DMP has formulated a comprehensive security strategy, he said.
According to the Commissioner, four to six layers of security have been arranged around the National Eidgah Ground.
Sweeping operations will be conducted by SB teams and CTTC’s K-9 Dog Squad, he said.
“CCTV cameras have been installed throughout the Eidgah area and nearby important points, while continuous monitoring will be carried out from a temporary DMP control room,” he said.
Security measures will also include archways, handheld metal detectors and manual searches at all entry points, he said.
Special barricade and screening arrangements will remain in place at key access points, including Matsya Bhaban Crossing, Press Club area and High Court Crossing.
“Watch towers and drone surveillance will also be used to monitor the overall situation from the air,” he added.
The Commissioner said plainclothes members of DB and CTTC units, along with uniformed police personnel, will be deployed for intelligence surveillance.
“SWAT, Bomb Disposal Unit and Counter Terrorism Unit will stay on standby to respond to any emergency situation,” he added.
Separate prayer arrangements, entry gates and security measures have been ensured for women worshippers, he said.
Fire service units and emergency medical teams will also remain prepared during the Eid congregation, he also said.
A “Lost and Found Centre” will be set up inside the National Eidgah police sub-control room to assist worshippers with lost belongings and announcements, he said.
The DMP Commissioner also said special traffic management measures will remain effective in and around the National Eidgah area from 6:00 am until the completion of Eid prayers.
He urged the city dwellers to arrive early, cooperate with security checks, avoid carrying bags, sharp objects or flammable materials, and follow traffic diversion and parking instructions.
He also requested citizens to immediately report any suspicious activity to on-duty police officers or the national emergency service 999.
Regarding the security of vacant areas in Dhaka during the Eid holidays, the Commissioner said that mobile, foot, and motorcycle patrols have been intensified.
Special surveillance has also been increased at banks, ATMs, shopping malls, markets, and other key establishments, he added.
He further said the DMP cyber unit is conducting round-the-clock monitoring to prevent rumours, misinformation and provocative propaganda on social media during the Eid period.
Any attempt to destabilise law and order through rumours or incitement will be dealt with strictly, he said.
